For more than 15 years now, we have been using and developing photogrammetry tools to carry out studies in the marine environment. The work undertaken covers various disciplines such as conservation biology, landscape studies, cartography, archaeology, etc. Over time, the equipment, modelling tools and acquisition techniques have evolved. In partnership with the LIS (Computer Science and Systems Laboratory, CNRS), we have developed a new device to optimise diving surveys: KarKam. It is composed of two full format digital cameras (reflex). The two cameras are synchronised using a specific external cable. The waterproof housings are attached to an aluminium platform on which two powerful continuous lights are also mounted. Finally, this assembly is coupled to an underwater booster allowing a controlled speed movement.
Thanks to this new device, we are able to significantly improve the quality of the ground surveys as well as the robustness of the models generated. The general ergonomics of KarKam and the autonomy of the lights allow us to carry out data acquisition sessions of about one hour. The experience of the team and the use of rebreathers allow us to produce surveys of several hundred square metres in a few dives.
At the moment we are testing Karkam on natural substrate and on wrecks. The first results, which are already conclusive, will be released in 2022.
